Childhood trauma, including experiences of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, neglect, and exposure to violence, has been increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of mental health outcomes in adulthood. The long-term psychological effects of early traumatic experiences can contribute to the development of various psychiatric disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders (Adegoke et al., 2023). Numerous studies have established a clear link between childhood trauma and the onset of adult psychiatric conditions, emphasizing the need for early intervention and trauma-informed care.
At the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, where individuals with psychiatric disorders are treated, many patients have a history of childhood trauma, which may contribute to the onset or exacerbation of their mental health conditions. However, while the relationship between childhood trauma and adult psychiatric disorders is well-documented in the global literature, there is limited research on this issue in Nigerian psychiatric settings. This study aims to examine the relationship between childhood trauma and the development of psychiatric disorders in adulthood, with a particular focus on patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.
Despite the growing body of research linking childhood trauma to adult psychiatric disorders, the specific relationship between these variables in Nigerian psychiatric hospitals remains underexplored. At the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, a significant number of adult patients present with mental health conditions that could be linked to past traumatic experiences. However, the understanding of how childhood trauma impacts the manifestation and course of psychiatric disorders in this population is insufficient. This study aims to investigate the relationship between childhood trauma and adult psychiatric disorders, with a focus on patients receiving treatment at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.
This study focuses on adult patients with psychiatric disorders at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, and explores the relationship between childhood trauma and the onset of psychiatric conditions. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting of traumatic experiences and the reliance on retrospective data. The study is also limited to one institution, and its findings may not be applicable to other regions or patient populations.
